Department of Fisheries Technology

The Department of Fisheries Technology was established in 2011. Admission into the Department started in 2012. Seven (7) sets of students have been therefore admitted from 2012 to date out of which five (5) had graduated.

VISSION AND MISSION OFTHE DEPARTMENT

The Department is intended to produce technicians who will be able to apply modern technology to cultivate and rear fish and other aquatic organisms at commercial level, participate in marine fishing, process, preserve and market fish on large scale for human consumption and other purposes.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

1. To assist in determining suitable environment, planning, construction and development of fish pond/farm.
2. To provide skills on all aquacultural activities.
3. To provide knowledge on modern techniques in stocking, feed preparation, nutrition, preservation and associated management practices in a fish farm enterprise.
4. To assist in construction and operation of simple fish processing and preservation equipments.
5. To provide skills on fishing gear construction.
6. To provide skills on operation and maintenance of different types of simple fishing gears and crafts.
7. To assist in fisheries extension and cooperation.
8. To provide computer skills and entrepreneurial knowledge to engage or set up a meaningful fishery-related business.

ABOUT THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Mubarak Ahmad is the pioneer staff of the Department, appointed in 2010. He obtained his first degree (B. Fisheries) and his Master’s degree in 2007 and 2017 respectively from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He had been the Exam officer of the department from 2012 to 2013 and has been the Head of the Department from 2018 to date. Mubarak Ahmad is a registered member of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON).
