BRIEF HISTORY OF COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

School of Science and Technology (SST) was one of the two foundation schools at the inception of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina. At the time when SST was created, the institution was referred to as the Katsina College of Arts, Science and Technology (KCAST) with campuses based in Zaria and Katsina but with the initial intention of wholesome transfer of the institution to Katsina. KCAST was established in 1973; the advanced commercial courses run in Zaria campus were moved to Katsina in 1979, for the purpose of establishing the Katsina campus of KCAST. These commercial courses paved way for the establishment of the School of Administration and Business Studies (SABS), this was followed by the establishment of SST which started in 1981 and became fully operational in October 1982 with four academic departments namely: Remedial Science (later renamed Science and Mathematics), Engineering, Environmental Studies then Agriculture and Catering Services departments. KCAST was then splitted into two independent institutions in January 1983, Zaria campus became the College of Advanced Studies (CAS), Zaria while the Katsina campus became the Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina with two existing schools, the School of Administration and Business Studies (SABS) and the School of Science and Technology (SST).

The SST took off with four academic departments and eleven programmes.

The four departments with the pioneer Heads of Department are listed below:

      S/No          Department                                           HOD

  1. Agriculture and Catering Services                           Sama’ila T. Gilima
  2. Engineering                                                                 Usman Mohammed
  3. Environmental Studies                                             Aminu Usman (i/c)
  4. Remedial Science (Science and Mathematics)   Umaru Musa Yar’adua (GCFR)

In 1990, the school system of administration in Katsina Polytechnic was phased out and replaced by the college system; this led to the creation of the College of Science and Technology (CST) from SST. Under the school system the SST was led by a Head of School (HOS) while under the college system, the CST is led by a Director.

In 1995 the Polytechnic was renamed, from Katsina Polytechnic to Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic after the late Major General Hassan Usman Katsina, Chiroman Katsina, a former Military Governor of the Northern Nigeria who died on the 24th of July 1995.

As the Polytechnic expands, four other colleges were created out of the CST in 2005, the colleges created were; College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Studies and College of Basic and Remedial Studies. In 2018, College of Vocational and Technical Education was again created out of the CST.
