Department of Office Technology and Management

Office Technology and Management is the study of a wide range of subjects related to careers in the modern office of today. This programme OTM provides the ability/training necessary to perform successfully in the many and varied clerical, secretarial and office administrative position. The Office Technology and Management is a two year programme for both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma respectively. The programme is designed to equip students with Secretarial/Office skills for employment in various fields of endeavour and also in entrepreneurship/vocational development. Students of this programme are exposed to course in their special areas as well as courses in general education. Students that have acquired the knowledge of vocational skills in office technology and management are highly equipped with effective work competencies and socio-psychological work skills which are very essential in everyday interactions with other.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The National and Higher National Diploma programme in Office Technology and Management is both a four semester programme for each and is designed to equip students with secretarial skills for employment as secretarial managers in various organizations and/or self employed.  Students in the programme will be offered professional, foundation and general education courses, which will enable them, acquire higher vocational and interpersonal skills in Office Technology and Management for their work effective competencies.

The graduate are trained to fit properly into the office of any organization and perform professionally, the functions of a secretary which among others include:  relating the functions of the office to the whole organisation, attending meeting and providing information as may be required, make accurate records of proceedings, filing and retrieving information, taking appropriate action independently when faced with challenging secretarial office problem, showing personal qualities and attributes conducive to tolerance and co-existence with the work group.

The diplomats are trained to exhibit adequate knowledge, skill and technical know-how to work effectively and efficiently in the technological and automated office of the millennium

To train prospective secretaries to become highly skilled and proficient in technology and management studies in order to become self-reliant and adequately equipped with entrepreneurial knowledge to meet the developmental needs of the nation.

The programme arrive to produce well qualified and competent ND and HND graduates of Office Technology and Management to serve as Bilingual Secretaries and to equip them with technological and office skills for employment in various fields of endeavour and equally for self-reliance.

To prepare ambitious students for further academic pursuits.

The Department of Office Technology and Management impart knowledge that is of good quality to professional office management who are outstanding among their equals and are able to discharge their duties with excellence.  The trained OTM professionals are image maker of the company or organisation they worked.  The training they have acquired will able them to perform effectively as office managers or office administrators.

The prospective professional office managers are trained to be loyal, honest, tactful to their executives.  They should be role model and act orderly, cheerfully and exhibit punctuality in their place of primary assignment.  They should be able to work under pressure and keep confidential matters secret.

To produce graduate (Secretaries/Office Managers) who will work in any computerized organisation with competency, secrecy and proficiency in office routine activities.

ABOUT THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Muhammad Dikko Haro joined the services of the then Katsina Polytechnic since December, 1989 later the institution was renamed Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic. He is a holder of M.Sc Vocational Education (Business Education/Secretarial Technology) from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State in 2017. Dikko has attended various conferences both local and international and has published reputable journals. He was formerly the Assistant Examination Officer and Examination Officer in the year 2008 and 2010 to 2014 respectively. He equally acted as Head of Department Office Technology and Management in 2012. He is a registered member of two professional bodies these are Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria and Association of Business Educators. Dikko is currently the substantive Head of Department Office Technology and Management (OTM). He is happily married with children.
